Majestic Maine Coons: Health and Well-Being

Curious Colorful Chaos Cattery: Maine Coon Cat Information, Health & Kittens

Our Maine Coon cats are imported from Russia and undergo extensive testing before breeding to ensure they meet the highest standards. Our Maine Coons are on the larger side, with strong, healthy genetics. All our Maine Coon kittens are TICA and CFA registered, and they are sold with a spay/neuter contract—no breeding rights, as we prioritize the health and well-being of our kittens.

We do not believe in ESN (early spay and neuter) as the best option for our kittens' health. Our Maine Coon kittens go home at 12 weeks of age, ensuring they are well-socialized and ready for their new homes.

Our breeding cats are DNA tested through Optimal Selection, with all results clear of any genetic disease indicators, parasites, and FeLV/FIV negative. Additionally, they undergo clear echocardiograms performed by a licensed cardiologist to rule out HCM and clear x-rays to rule out hip and patella dysplasia.

Pricing for our Maine Coon kittens starts at $3500. To learn what our babies come with, visit our Go-Home Package.

Every animal in our care is FeLV and FIV negative. The health and happiness of our Maine Coon cats and kittens are our top priority."

Predisposed health conditions

Why health testing is so important on potential breeding Maine coons. Genetic conditions the Maine coon breed is predisposed to.

Majestic Maine Coons: Understanding Health Predispositions

Maine Coon cats weigh between 10 to 25 pounds.  Male maine coon cats weigh between 15 to 25 pounds (about 6.8 to 11kg), while Female maine coons average 10 to 15 pounds (about 4.5 to 6.8 kg). Their large, rectangular-built body shape and long hair make them even bigger.   Maine Coon cats slowly mature and are not considered an adult until they’re between three to five years old.

A reputable Maine Coon breeder will have genetic tests performed on all of her breeding cats to screen for these genetic defects prior to breeding them. In the Maine Coon, these are the common genetic tests that should be performed.

  • HCM – Feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a disease of the heart muscle in which the walls thicken and the heart enlarges.
  • SMA – Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disease seen in Maine Coon cats. The disease is characterized by progressive instability with unsteady gait and posture abnormalities due to loss of motor neurons in the lower spinal cord and atrophy of muscles in the hind limbs.
  • PKD – Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is an inherited condition in cats that causes multiple cysts (pockets of fluid) to form in the kidneys. These cysts are present from birth. Initially, they are very small but they grow larger over time and may eventually disrupt kidney function resulting in kidney failure.

Dominant Blue Eyes

What Makes Us Different

At Curious Colorful Chaos Cattery, we are deeply committed to the health, well-being, and ethical breeding of our Maine Coon cats. We understand the controversy surrounding dominant blue eyes and want to provide education, not debate. Our page is dedicated to sharing information from studies we've personally reviewed and will always welcome respectful, informed discussions on the topic.

Research on blue eyes in Maine Coons highlights a range of potential issues, but it's important to note that the studies often focus on small sample sizes, few catteries, and homozygous breeding complications. While these studies are valuable, they are only the beginning. Much more research is needed to fully understand the long-term effects of these traits.

We believe in responsible breeding practices, and we have seen firsthand the damage that can be done when breeding is done without adequate knowledge. Unfortunately, some breeders use this topic as a way to attack others rather than truly working toward solutions. We encourage you to educate yourself, ask questions, and be proactive in your search for a healthy and happy Maine Coon companion.

In our cattery, we prioritize health and then appearance. We've tested numerous cats—many with non-dominant blue eyes—and some, despite their beauty, did not meet our high health standards. We will never knowingly breed animals with health issues that can be prevented. We have even invested in testing for cats from other breeders, only to discover fraudulent claims that resulted in the loss of a life—a heartbreaking experience we aim to prevent.

Unlike many breeders who view this as a business, we approach breeding as a passion and a responsibility. This journey began because my children were heartbroken over animals that suffered due to illness, and it became clear there needed to be a place for people to find healthy, pedigreed Maine Coons from ethical breeders. Though we are a minority in this industry, we are committed to doing things right.

Please, do your research, ask questions, and ensure that the breeder you choose is truly dedicated to the well-being of their animals. We are here to provide the best possible environment for our Maine Coon kittens and to support you in your search for a forever companion.

Comprehensive Health Testing at Curious Colorful Chaos Maine coon Cattery.

At Curious Colorful Chaos Cattery, we prioritize the health and well-being of our Maine Coon cats through extensive testing and strict care protocols. All of our beautiful Kings and Queens are FIV/FELV/FIV negative, ensuring they are free from these common viruses. Additionally, we continuously perform PCRs and fecals to monitor and maintain the health of our cats.

Our cattery operates as a completely closed facility to prevent any exposure to outside pathogens. Any new animal that comes into our cattery is quarantined for months to ensure they are healthy before joining our breeding program. We also take proactive measures by performing hip and patella x-rays, which are professionally evaluated, as well as echocardiograms to assess heart health and rule out any potential issues.

Each of our adults and kittens is carefully evaluated and vaccinated by a licensed veterinarian. We take preventive steps to ensure the long-term health of our cats, including:

  • BAER testing: BAER testing (to ensure no hearing abnormalities, as he has passed this testing).
  • PAX Gene Testing: To ensure genetic health and reduce the risk of inherited conditions.

This is just a summary of the rigorous testing we perform to provide you with healthy, happy, and well-socialized Maine Coon kittens. Your kitten's health is our top priority, and we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of care for all of our cats.

Ethical Breeding Practices at Curious Colorful Chaos Cattery

At Curious Colorful Chaos Cattery, we take great care to ensure that our breeding practices prioritize the mental and physical health of our Maine Coons. We do not overbreed our queens, and each breeding is done only if the queen is willing. We recognize that not all males and females are compatible socially, so nothing is ever forced. The well-being of our cats comes first, always.

Our Commitment to Health

  • We never breed a queen that shows signs of physical or mental distress. If a mother has problems or does not wish to be a mother, we do not proceed with breeding.
  • We maintain a strict policy of not breeding cats with a history of illnesses, even if cured. For example, we do not breed queens with a history of mammary hyperplasia or FIP (though we have never had FIP in our cattery).
  • We avoid breeding dominant blue-eyed (DBE) cats to other DBE cats or to latent DBE lines. This practice is in line with research and studies, including those on human Waardenburg syndrome type 1, which may provide insight into potential issues.
  • We test mate and strive for 0% inbreeding, ensuring genetic diversity and a healthy gene pool.

Why Choose Us?
As ethical Maine Coon breeders, our primary focus is on producing healthy, well-socialized kittens with excellent temperaments. Our cattery is dedicated to breeding only the best Maine Coons, and we take great pride in offering worldwide delivery options so that families around the globe can welcome one of our kittens into their homes.

Your kitten’s health and happiness are our top priorities, and we are committed to the highest breeding standards to ensure every kitten thrives.

 Our Commitment to Care

At Curious Colorful Chaos Cattery, we are committed to providing the highest standard of care for our Maine Coon cats and kittens. We never have more litters than we can properly care for, ensuring each kitten receives individual attention and love. Each newborn kitten is carefully weighed twice a day to monitor their health, and we make adjustments to their care as needed.

Our cattery is meticulously maintained, with each cat's litter cleaned twice a day. We use the Breeze Litter System, which allows us to monitor both urine and stool daily for any potential health concerns. Our cats' nails are clipped weekly, and we check their eyes, ears, and noses daily to ensure they stay clean and healthy.

To maintain their well-being, all cats are brushed at least weekly, and their teeth are brushed 2-3 times a week. In addition, we use VetriDent spray between brushings to help with oral health. Our cats always have access to dry food, fresh water in clean bowls every day, and are given a nutritious wet food dinner every night.

This is just a glimpse of the care and attention we provide to our Maine Coons. We go above and beyond to ensure they are healthy, happy, and well-socialized. Your kitten’s health and happiness are our priority, and we are dedicated to providing them with the best environment possible.
